I and my children are living proof of all of this after 20+ years treating depression, anxiety, ADD and OCD with medicines that caused new problems and never really helped the symptoms beyond numbing our brains so we could think as fast.

2-1/2 years ago I switched to a ketogenic diet. Within 2 months I was completely off my ADD medication that I had been on for over 12 years. At four months I was completely off over 12 other Rx that I relied on for over 20 years for one condition or another. I’ve been prescription free ever since. As have my sons.

And guess what?

I no longer have the deep symptoms of depression and anxiety. I have the energy of my youth and am no longer fatigued. My sons have disabilities that no longer overpower their entire day. They are getting ALL the benefits that the medications claimed to give, but without the life ruining side effects.

It’s our food. It is killing our nation and keeping big Ag and Big Pharma rich.

I said “enough” and I refuse to let any of them have power over my health ever again.

I still struggle with a mild depression, but it’s from some tragic life events and it makes sense, perfectly normal, expected. But no where near as bad as it would be without a ketogenic diet and using Pharma solutions. Never again.

It’s not the food that causes health problems.

It’s poor metabolic function and allergic reactions.

Expand full comment

Well that metabolic function was screwed up from the food. Seed oils, constant elevation of insulin from excess sugars and simple carbs dominating 80% of our calories, yada yada. It all stems from bad food and a lack of nutrients in the food from stripped dirt that things are grown in or improper handling/feeding/processing of the animals used for meat. Allergic reactions are to the chemicals and additives in the food too. Think Frankenfood. In the end it all leads back to poor quality food over a long period of time creating metabolic dysfunction.

Also from the food itself

Some day look into how they study allergies and youll know then how people become allergic

If I give you a big arsenic or plutonium or Monsanto milkshake, your body will react. The food & the chems in them do cause health issues & more. But yes, your body's immune system & metabolic buzz word is involved.

Thank you for sharing that. I also had a seventeen year battle with psychiatric medicine. Cured it by finding a book called "Hope for Hypoglycemia, it's not your mind, it's your liver". Low blood sugar is the main cause of insomnia, we eat way too much starch, and you are correct to say that modern food is the cause of most mental illness. One lucky break for me was finding out about lactobacillus reutieri and adding kefir to my diet. Not only is it necessary for the production of oxytocin, it boosts testosterone production and makes milk products digestible. Might make for further gains for your boys.

Juju, your experience with the ketogenic diet is truly remarkable and inspiring.

What advice would you give to someone considering a similar dietary change to manage their health conditions?

#1 Do the research. Do the hard work of reading as much as you can about the science behind ketosis and insulin, and tracking down videos by reliable, experienced doctors in the field. (Most of which have separated from standard, modern institutions that have been captured by politics so that they can tell the truth without consequences Sound familiar?) And take notes. I filled up two extra thick 5-subject notebooks while studying and that helped solidify to memory what was important. Your health has got to be just as important if not more than anything else you give that kind of devoted time to, degrees, careers, parenting, finances, etc. None of that matters if your health interferes and won’t let you succeed in them anyway. It always should have come first but we lazily handed that responsibility of learning to doctors and put all our faith in following whatever they told us to do. Yet most doctors receive less than 18 hours of nutritional training and what is being taught is compromised by power and money, and it’s dead wrong. Nina Teicholzi is a good resource to understand what is wrong with the standard American nutritional advice by our government, and medical and academic institutions. Dr Lustig’s “Metabolical” is good insight into what is wrong with our medical system and what is wrong with our food supply and nutritional advice. Dr Ken Barry, while a big promoter of carnivore, still teaches Keto and has some of the best videos and interviews out there that help give a proper perspective on low carb diets and why they are so effective. His book “Lies My Doctor Told Me” is fantastic too. Dr Georgia Ede is also fantastic and has a book that explains the ketogenic diet. Dr Jason Fung “The Obesity Code” is fabulous and he teaches about fasting better than anyone else out there. Dr Eric Westman also a fantastic resource. There’s many more. BUT, there is 10x as many quacks and get famous/rich overnight frauds too. Get referrals only from the most reliable and respected. Some organizations have lost their way or been purposefully hijacked as a way to infiltrate the movement and curb its reach, such as DietDoctor. They lost their way in recent years and started to promote things that are contrary to the science, taken over by trying to return them to the faulty nutritional advice our institutions want. Some well respected doctors left their space because of this. So be aware. Start with the ones I gave you and branch out from there with a solid foundational understanding of the science.

#2 Eliminate ALL sugar and ALL processed foods. Learn all the different ingredients that are just sugar disguised by a different name. Learn what ingredients are actually worse than sugar. For instance, Maltodextrin is often used for its sweetening ability and it gives manufactures a way to label “sugar free”. Yet sugar is a 65 on the glycemic index, but maltodextrin is a 135 or 138, the highest of them all. It’s worse than the effects of sugar. This is where the false logic comes from that it’s better to use straight sugar than substitutes. Not true. A GI of 65 is terrible too! It’s not better, it’s just “better than maltodextrin.” 🙄 I refuse to use any substitute that is higher than a 1 on the GI. Learn about insulin and the effect of different ingredients on blood sugar. Learn what other obscure ingredients are damaging to our health. I stuck with a rule that if I don’t recognize an ingredient by name I won’t eat it, and if the ingredients list is too long I put it back. Not worth the risk. Whole foods have short ingredient lists. And the very rare processed food that IS healthy will only have a handful of identifiable whole ingredients. Be willing to relearn how to cook from scratch using whole foods. I even learned to make a few of my own condiments and staples.

#3 To support #2, and set yourself up for success by protecting yourself in moments of weakness until your body adjusts and kicks the severe food addictions, empty out your pantry, cupboards, refrigerator and freezers of all non-Keto approved foods and staples. I removed two full large boxes, and I donated the one with the simple ingredient high carb foods to a food pantry, but threw away the other because after all that I learned it felt like donating poison to the poor. I just couldn’t do it. It was full of over-processed, sugar-ladened, chemical-lamented crap. Frankenfoods. Yes it was a lot of money getting rid of it all, but I was placing a value on my health. In the end the total cost of food I threw out or donated was about the cost of one or two doctor visits. My health had to be worth more than that. With the wrong food gone, in moments of cravings and nibbling and withdrawal, you will only have Keto approved foods to choose from. In over two years I have only ever “cheated” by maybe eating a bit more of Keto-approved foods, or a bit higher “healthy” carbs. Addictions are powerful and you need protections in place, and make no mistake the addictions to our food supply are very real and just as difficult to overcome as drugs and alcohol. If you live in a household with others that don’t want to do the diet do one of two things: 1) agree to separate spaces to store food, but keep the immediate kitchen/cooking spaces low carb, and get separate fridges, or 2) do what I did. I had put my health on the back burner for 20+ years as I tended to my family’s needs. I asked them to love me as much as I had loved them all those years and to please fully support my efforts and what I needed. The result is my husband and both my boys became low carb and they are amazingly healthier and more fit themselves now. My husband has not been this thin since his 20s but at the age of 57 he runs circles around the young guys all day at work. I wish I would have understood all that I do now while my kids were little and raised them with this proper way of eating from the start.

#4 In the beginning track everything. (Unless you choose carnivore then it’s not necessary) I chose to use Carb Manager because it’s recipe creation and ingredient look-up was far superior than My Fitness Pal or any other app. They all have limitations but CM has less headaches overall and it’s quick and easy to use. Most importantly is to track your carbs to know exactly what you really are getting. When you don’t track you actually are getting 2-3x more carbs than you think you are. Tracking fat is also important in the beginning because it is the lever that is necessary for being satiated and keeping addictive hunger under control. As your body transitions from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat, you become fat adapted and will need to track less and less as your body naturally starts to regulate the way it was meant to. You will no longer have the addictive urge to eat all the time and you start to only feel a need to eat when you need the fuel. It’s actually quite miraculous what happens when your body begins to function the right way and when your organs begin to heal. (And yes, anyone who has been eating the standard American diet for the past few decades is in dire need of internal healing of their organs and systems, whether they are overweight or not. Some don’t realize this until after being on the diet for about 4-6 months and then they see clearly by how amazing they feel. So long as they didn’t cheat.

#5 Understand from day one this is not a “diet” like all the others. This is a WOE: Way of Eating. It’s a lifestyle change. It’s permanent. It’s not meant to be used as an occasional tool. Biggest mistake people make and then they think low carb can’t work for them. It wasn’t the diet it was their lack of proper implementation.

#6 Seek out support groups to ask questions and get support. You can start with ketogenicforums.com. Reliable and absolutely amazing community. Take with a grain of salt the chat features in the tracking apps like CM and the like. Most are the blind leading the blind. Some veterans stick around to try and help, but the majority are trying to figure it out so there is a LOT of misinformation, especially by those who don’t do their homework first and just try to wing it. They simply parrot snippets they hear or read here and there. Knowing this can help save you time.

Good luck! The health is there for the taking if you’re willing to take back the power.

Restrictive diets may provide symptom relief, but they are by no means a panacea.

I think it’s of the upmost importance that we start focusing on causality.

Once we establish causation, we can immediately begin mitigating risk factors and focusing on prevention.

Expand full comment

The Ketogenic diet isn’t really a “restrictive” diet in the way they like to spin that it is. It restricts poison, period. There is no amount of poison that is healthy for you so you can’t simply restrict it, you must “abstain” from it.

A healthy diet that actually heals you at a cellular level both mentally and physically avoids ALL sugar and ALL processed foods. When you eat that way you are only allowing whole, unadulterated foods into your body. That may sound like restriction but it’s because people hate change and to be limited. But if it’s poison that you are limiting then it’s not. When you start to profoundly heal all that is wrong in your body because of the food you have been eating, you learn that it isn’t a “diet” at all but a way of eating. (WOE).

I concur: DO NOT confuse a highly restrictive ”diet” with a way of eating! Also DON’T IGNORE the impact of full spectrum SUNLIGHT on your metabolism!!!🤔

The real point is: Get your BASE right, then you can start to heal! We are all creatures of the Sun! But there are NO panaceas.

I was diagnosed with depression many years ago and have been on and off meds, even tried Ketamine infusion (a disaster). I've always had a good job, married, kids, all the societal markers of sanity have been hit. My confusion is this, at one point in my life I took something (can't even remember, Zoloft?) and it was like an awakening, I was a different person. But the effect faded over the following months. I've never had such a reaction again. Today I am seeing a therapist who is applying CBT concepts and it is helping. I believe that my depression is somewhat a cost I pay for the creative, impulsive side to my personality, an impulse that is me, is a strength and is not one I want to smother. I am open to dietary changes, or any quest for some organic roots. The person below suggests a ketogentic diet, I'll look into it. But I think the fact that you are talking about it is inherently positive and healthy. I also realize that the pharma industry (sorry the therapy industry too) does not want cured clients, it is not in their economic interests. And when you peel back motives, often at the centre is money.

I have a lot of personal experience with mental illness, I can certainly relate. Anti-depressants are shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, they also lower testosterone in men (testosterone is pro-inflammatory). What I realized was that medicating symptoms was like taking 1 step forward, and 2 steps backwards. By suppressing symptoms, I was suppressing my immune response and throwing my hormones further out of balance. Drastic dietary changes can be dangerous FYI, I learned that the hard way.

One of the best things I can recommend is keeping a journal at the end of every day. Write down your entire day - EVERYTHING and make note of when you are having symptoms. Within a short period of time, you'll see connections. Certain things in your lifestyle and diet will improve symptoms, others will make them worse, adjust accordingly. Your journal will serve you well further down the road if symptoms pop up again. This playbook can be used for just about any disease process, not just mental health problems.

I also wonder how much of mental illness is being caused by our horrible processed foods, or side effects from all the ridiculous drugs they shove at us or even the Covid and other vaccines. It has become very apparent that big pharma and big food manufacturers have colluded to make us sick.

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I need to have pain meds so I can’t be without a doctor. All neurologists want to prescribe immune suppressing drugs. They are beginning to determine that the Epstein Barr various reactivating plays a roll in MS. Not your immune systems attacking itself. However they continue to push their drugs. People with MS mostly dont die from it. They die from pneumonia and cancer. Could that be because their immune system’s were suppressed. In our healthcare system you have to advocate for yourself but doctors done cure much of anything. All they do is prescribe drugs.

Awesome article - thank you! Please read “Ultra-Processed People” by Chris Van Tulleken to see how truly f’d up our Nutrition Science is, now as worthless as Viroliegy & Climate Science. All of these ‘sciences’ & their regulators have been captured/corrupted by bigXXX (pick one, they’re guilty). And yes, large powerful orgs are trying to kill us with toxic food, modified gene therapies called vaccines, EMFs and chemtrails(proven via rain/snow/soil testing, court testimonies & govt grants). And as we are poisoned our mental health declines, not rocket science.

Food isn’t alternative medicine, it’s the original medicine. Avoid western meds & doctors if you can - they are 3rd leading cause of death in USA.

Conventional psychiatrists are neither trained nor inclined to research for solutions to address the mammoth scope and scale of this problem.
